A Family’s Perspective

Kennedy Consulting Group clients Kerry and Martin Shelby share their experience working on an admission plan for their daughter, Jenny (Yale University).

Why did you choose the Kennedy Consulting Group?

The college admissions process can be overwhelming. We did not want to deny our highly motivated daughter the opportunity of admission to the best universities because of our lack of understanding of the process. With Mike's help, we learned the questions that needed to be answered.

What did Mike do for you?

Mike provided personalized coaching throughout our daughter’s high school years as well as during the actual admission process. He helped construct a high school course schedule that would challenge our daughter, provide an outlet for her creativity, and make her a competitive candidate for college admission. He offered insight into specific colleges, and suggested additional colleges to broaden our search. Our daughter created a list that she felt confident we're a good match for her. She was accepted to all seven colleges on her list.

Why would you recommend the Kennedy Consulting Group to other families?

It can get highly emotional at times between the parent and student when parents offer advice and guidance. Mike can be the objective person in the admission process. His knowledge and experience keep you on track and focused on a successful outcome. What advantage did Mike offer that you couldn't have gotten on your own? Our daughter had aspirations to attend a highly competitive, out-of-state college; her guidance office was very adept at sending students to in-state schools. With Mike's advice, our daughter learned how to navigate the high school curriculum to her academic advantage, enjoy her extra curricular activities, and establish a mutually respectful relationship with her guidance counselor. Mike offered an invaluable source that our daughter could not have otherwise received at her large public high school.
